Multiplication and Division Properties of Inequalities |
---|
When you multiply or divide an inequality by a positive number, it remains true. |
Let's try to solve the inequality below:
4x > 8
All we have to do is divide each side by 4.
x > 2
Any value of x that is greater than 2 will work as a solution for the original inequality.
What if we have the following equation?
-4x > 8
All we have to do is divide each side by (-4). However, when you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, the inequality symbol must be reversed.
x < -2
Any value of x that is less than (-2) will work as a solution for the original inequality.
